Buying from us

Can I buy one tote?+

Yes. One tote, one pickup, one check. Come by the yard during business hours or email to reserve.

What does "reconditioned" mean, exactly?+

It means the tote has gone through our four-stage cleaning loop (hot rinse, caustic option, hot rinse, air dry), passed a 3 PSI pressure test, and received a current UN/DOT label. Full details on the reconditioning page.

Are your totes UN/DOT certified?+

Our A-grade totes are. B-grade totes are cleaned and functional but not re-labeled. Ask us per order.

Can you deliver?+

Yes — we run drop-trailers and a box truck throughout the Carolinas. See logistics for service area and pricing.

Do you take credit cards?+

Yes — credit, ACH, and checks. Cash is welcome too.

Do you sell in quantity?+

We ship truckloads regularly. See the selling page for quantity discounts.

Selling to us

How do I sell my empties?+

Email us a count and a photo. We quote, schedule a pickup, and pay on delivery. Details on the buying page.

What's a used tote worth?+

Anywhere from $4 (recycle stream) to $240+ (food-grade, caged steel, or stainless). Condition, previous contents, and quantity all matter.

Do I need to clean the totes before you pick them up?+

No — we handle cleaning in-house. The exception is if there are liquid residuals inside. For hazardous residuals we can introduce you to a licensed cleaner.

How far will you travel for a pickup?+

Our routine radius is ~400 miles from Charlotte. For larger loads (40+) we go further, or route via carrier partners.

Food-grade & chemistry

Can I use a used tote for drinking water?+

Only if it is certified food-grade AND you can verify the chain of cleaning to your satisfaction — most people have a third-party NSF/ANSI 61 review done. For non-potable water (gardening, livestock, apiary), a food-grade used tote is an excellent choice.

What were the totes' previous contents?+

Varies. Each food-grade tote we sell has a documented previous-contents record tied to its chalk serial. We\'ll send it with the tote.

Are your food-grade totes NSF-certified?+

Our cleaning loop is NSF-equivalent, but individual totes are not individually NSF-certified. The HDPE resin used in the original bottle is. If you need per-tote NSF certification, rebottling (new bottle) is the right product.

Can you handle solvents, paint, or hazardous chemistry?+

Yes — in caged steel or stainless. See caged steel.

Totes at the yard

Can I walk in?+

Yes — walk-ins welcome during hours. Ask for whoever\'s in the triage bay.

Do I need an appointment?+

Not to browse or buy a tote or two. For loads of 10+ or for stainless inventory, email ahead so we can stage.

Can I inspect the tote before buying?+

Please do — we encourage it. Bring a flashlight.

Why don't you have a phone?+

Because email is faster and more accurate for what we do. Details on the contact page.

Logistics & specs

Will an IBC fit through a standard doorway?+

Not a 36" man-door. Plan on a 48" doorway or a roll-up dock. See the size guide.

How many totes fit in a 53' dry van?+

~40 on a well-packed load (two-high, five rows, two wide).

Can I stack them two-high in my warehouse?+

Yes — two-high is the practical limit in storage. Three-high is risky with used cages.

Do I need special equipment?+

A forklift or pallet jack that can handle ~2,500 lb fully loaded.

Sustainability & policy

Do you ever landfill anything?+

No. Zero landfill tickets since day one. See the sustainability page.

Can I get a recycling certificate for my ESG report?+

Yes — we issue them with every recycling load. Just ask.

Is "reuse" actually more sustainable than recycling?+

For IBC totes, yes — by roughly 6x per unit. Reusing skips the energy cost of grinding, melting, and re-forming.

How do you calculate CO₂e avoided?+

We use PlasticsEurope (2020) for HDPE resin impact, worldsteel LCI (2021) for steel cage impact, and EPA SmartWay for freight factors. Each reused tote avoids approximately 278 kg CO₂e vs. manufacturing new. Full methodology on the carbon impact page.

What happens to the wash water from cleaning?+

Our closed-loop system reclaims 94% of wash water through settling tanks and carbon filtration. The 6% we discharge goes to Charlotte Water's municipal treatment system and meets all pre-treatment requirements.

Rebottling & reconditioning details

What is the difference between reconditioned and rebottled?+

Reconditioned means the original HDPE bottle is cleaned, tested, and reused. Rebottled means the old bottle is removed and a brand-new virgin-HDPE bottle is installed inside the reused cage. Rebottled is more expensive but offers a new-bottle experience with 60% less carbon than a fully new tote.

How long does rebottling take?+

About 25–35 minutes per unit. We rebottle to order (not stocked) so lead time is typically 3–5 business days.

Can I send you my own totes for reconditioning?+

Yes — we recondition customer-owned totes. Pricing: ~$45 for standard HDPE, ~$60 for food-grade, ~$95 for caged steel. Turnaround: 24–72 hours. Details here.

Do you recondition stainless totes?+

We can passivate and clean stainless totes in-house. For electropolishing, we partner with a specialty shop in Charlotte. Turnaround for EP is 5–7 business days.

What pressure do you test at?+

3 PSI held for 10 minutes — the UN/DOT specification for composite IBC reconditioning under 49 CFR 178.801. Any pressure drop exceeding 0.1 PSI fails the tote.

Fabrication & upcycling

Can you build a custom project from a sketch?+

Yes — email us a sketch, description, or even a photo of something you saw on Instagram. We quote materials and labor, and build it in our fab shop. Fabrication details.

How much does a rain barrel cost?+

A standard single-unit rain barrel conversion runs $185–$245. Linked arrays (2–6 units) run $395–$1,400 depending on plumbing complexity.

Do you sell just the cage for a project?+

Yes — cages without bottles are available as fab stock at $25–$45. Great for beehive platforms, raised bed frames, and structural projects.

Can I buy a donor tote and build it myself?+

Absolutely. We stock fab-ready donor totes at $45–$95, pre-sorted by project type. Come by the yard and we will help you pick the right one.

Do you deliver fabrication projects?+

Yes — local delivery (Charlotte metro) is usually $45–$75. For larger or heavier builds, we quote based on distance and vehicle needed.

Accessories & fittings

What thread type do your fill caps use?+

Most of our totes use S60x6 (European fine thread). We also stock S56 (American coarse). These are NOT interchangeable — an S56 cap will cross-thread on an S60 neck. Bring the old cap and we will match it.

Do you sell replacement valves?+

Yes — 2" NPT ball valves in brass or polypropylene, $18–$32 each. Our most-shipped accessory. See the accessories page.

Can I convert a 2" NPT valve to a garden hose?+

Yes — we stock 2" NPT × 3/4" GHT reducers in brass and plastic. $8–$14 each. Flow rate will be limited by the garden hose (~8–15 GPM).

What gasket material should I use?+

EPDM for water and food applications. Viton for chemicals, solvents, and fuels. PTFE for universal chemical resistance. Silicone for high-temperature or pharma applications. We stock all four.

Safety & compliance

Can I use a used tote for gasoline or diesel?+

No. HDPE totes are NOT suitable for petroleum fuels. Chemical compatibility is poor and static-discharge risk is real. For fuel, you need a UN-rated steel or stainless container with proper grounding.

Are your totes safe for pressurized contents?+

No. IBC totes are atmospheric-rated containers, not pressure vessels. Maximum working pressure is typically 1.5 PSI above atmospheric. For pressurized applications, you need a purpose-built pressure vessel.

Can I stack three totes high?+

We do not recommend it with used totes. Two-high is the practical limit. Three-high is technically possible with brand-new cages under ideal conditions, but the risk of cage collapse on used units makes it inadvisable.

How do I dispose of a tote at end of life?+

Bring it to us or schedule a pickup. We recycle every component — HDPE to flake, steel to mill, pallets to reuse. We never charge a tipping fee and we never landfill. Recycling details.
